Marseille is the administrative capital of a large area of southern France, including Provence, the Alpes and the Côte d'Azur.  Although it is perched on the Mediterranean coast, Marseille has a sprawling urban area with a population size second only to Paris.  There are a huge number of sights to visit in and around Marseille, including Le Vieux Port (the Old Port), the Notre Dame de la Garde and the Musee des Docks Romains.  Further afield you can find Château d'If (where the 'Comte de Monte-Cristo' was set) and the towns of Aix-en-Provence and La Seyne-sur-Mer.

Marseilles is serviced by the Marseille-Provence International Airport (Aeroport de Marseille Provence / Marseille-Marignane Airport) which is located halfway between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence in the town of Marignane.  The A7 motorway, signed as L'Autoroute du Soleil, forms a direct link between Marseille and it's airport, so whilst it is located approximately twenty-five kilometres to the north-east of Marseille itself the airport is still easy to get to and from.  Many airlines fly into and out of the airport's four terminals, including British Airways (terminal 1), BMI Baby, Easy Jet and Ryan Air (terminal 2), and Air France (terminal 3 and 4).  For car hire, always advisable in an area best explored by private transport, visit the car rental desks in hall one (on the bottom level).  Avis, ADA, Budget, Hertz, National-Citer, Europcar and Sixt are all represented at this location.
